Asilomar State Beach
Asilomar is the crown jewel of surf spots in the Monterey area. This spot
boasts the potential for huge surf, which also still holds its shape
beautifully. Due to full swell exposure, a variety of sand bars, reefs, and
point breaks, I consider Asilomar to be the premier spot in the area. But
with quality comes crowds, and this area can become frustratingly crowded –
when it’s small. On the bright side, if the swell size is larger than about
8 feet, Asilomar's sheer intimidation factor usually keeps the weekend
warriors away. The waves here break far on the outside so be prepared for a
long paddle out if the swell is sizeable.
Spanish Bay
Spanish Bay is located just south of Asilomar, and is also called South Moss
Beach. It has several different breaks, including a nice right-hander just
off the reef in the middle of the bay. This area is often a respite for
those seeking smaller surf when Asilomar is working out its issues. Beware
the random rocks/boils underwater when surfing the point breaks.
-Breaks best with west, northwest swells
-Exposed to many swell directions
-Can hold massive size without closing out
-Currents can be very strong, and wave size can
be intense
-Crowds are an issue only when conditions are
smaller and more favorable
-High wind conditions are common in the
afternoons
